For most of my adult life, anyone who spoke openly about non-human intelligence risked being quietly filed under “crank”. That changed on 26 July 2023, when a former intelligence officer testified before a US House oversight subcommittee and, under oath, described what he had been told about a decades-long crash retrieval programme. He went further and claimed the US had recovered non-human “biologics” from alleged crash sites. None of this has been publicly proven, and much of that hearing was actually about something far more mundane: how pilots report what they see. But the tone had shifted. The public question is no longer whether something is out there. It is what it wants.

And that is exactly where official disclosure runs into a wall. A government can, perhaps, admit that craft exist. It can release footage, declassify reports and fund studies. What it cannot do is explain intention, because intention is not a property of metal. It belongs to consciousness.

The Law of One teacher Aaron Abke made this point recently in his series on the Ra material, and it struck me as one of the clearest framings of the ET question I have come across. This article is my own attempt to work through the same idea, in my own words, and to add a few thoughts of my own.

The Question Disclosure Cannot Answer

Imagine handing a violin to a brilliant engineer who has never heard music. She could measure the wood, analyse the varnish, calculate the tension of every string and write a thousand pages on its acoustics. She would still have no idea what a violin is for.

Our approach to UFOs has been much the same. We obsess over propulsion, materials and flight characteristics, and those questions are genuinely fascinating. But they are the varnish and the strings. If we want to understand who these beings are, we need to ask what they value, how they see the universe and what rules they believe they must follow when dealing with a younger civilisation like ours.

Those are spiritual questions. Which is why I keep returning to one particular source.

Why the Ra Material Is the Right Place to Look

Between 1981 and 1984, a small research group in Louisville, Kentucky held 106 trance sessions with an entity that called itself Ra. Don Elkins asked the questions, Carla Rueckert served as the instrument and Jim McCarty kept the records. The group had been studying UFO contact for years, and their instinct was a wise one: rather than chase hardware, ask about philosophy.

Ra described itself as a sixth-density social memory complex, meaning a civilisation that has become so unified in consciousness that it speaks and acts as one mind. What came through over those four years was not a catalogue of star systems and spaceships but a coherent metaphysics. At its centre sits one idea that explains almost everything else about ET behaviour: polarity.

Two Directions, No Middle Ground

According to Ra, every self-aware being eventually faces a single fundamental choice. You can orient your life around serving others, or around serving yourself. Everything else is detail.

Think of a sewing needle. Left alone, it points nowhere in particular. Rub it against a magnet and it becomes a compass: it now has a direction, it responds to the field around it and it can actually be used for navigation. An unpolarised soul is like the untouched needle. It drifts. It reacts. It cannot really do anything with the enormous forces moving through it.

Most of humanity, Ra suggests, lives in exactly that drifting state, neither clearly committed to love nor clearly committed to control. Ra has a memorable name for this territory: the sinkhole of indifference. It is not a punishment. It is simply a place you keep returning to, lifetime after lifetime, until you finally choose a direction.

Why Advanced Beings Are Never Half-Hearted

Here is where most of us go wrong when we think about ETs. We project our own inconsistency onto them. We picture them as moody, like us: helpful on a good day, dangerous on a bad one, so best not provoked.

Ra’s material points the other way. By the time a civilisation can cross interstellar space, it has long since settled the question of polarity. Consider why. An orchestra in which half the players are quietly trying to sabotage the performance will never make it to the concert hall. A society divided against itself spends its energy fighting itself, which is precisely what we see on Earth: our technology has raced far ahead of our wisdom, and we keep building tools faster than we learn to use them kindly.

So the beings we encounter have, in Ra’s framework, already chosen. The positively oriented ones organise around cooperation and shared purpose. The negatively oriented ones organise around a rigid ranking of who controls whom; L/L Research describes the Orion empire as built on power against power, with the strong commanding the weak. What you will not find at that level is a being that is sometimes benevolent and sometimes cruel. That muddle, it turns out, is a feature of young planets.

The 51 Percent Door and the 95 Percent Door

Ra even put numbers on the choice. In session 17, Don Elkins asked what it takes to graduate from our current level of consciousness into the next. For the positive path, the threshold is just over half: an orientation of 51 percent or more toward the good of others. For the negative path, the bar sits at 95 percent service to self.

The 51 percent figure is often misunderstood as a call to martyrdom. It is nothing of the sort. It simply means that other people’s needs weigh as much as your own. You still eat, rest, set boundaries and look after yourself. You just stop treating everyone else as scenery.

The 95 percent figure tells us something about the nature of the negative path. When every member of a group is a potential rival, alliances only last as long as a shared target. The moment that target is taken, the infighting begins. Staying on that path requires a near-total, relentless commitment, which is why Ra calls it so difficult.

There is a hopeful footnote in that same session. Ra said that on Earth, those who are ready for the positive path greatly outnumber those ready for the negative one, even though the world often looks darker than that from the inside.

Why the Benevolent Ones Hang Back

If positive ETs are here and they care, why do they not simply land and help?

Ra’s answer begins with compassion. In session 14, Ra compared all of creation to a single body. If one part is wounded, the rest of the body feels it and responds. “There is no ignoring a call,” Ra said. Humanity’s collective suffering registers as exactly that kind of call.

But the response is governed by an even deeper principle: free will. Picture a fleet of luminous ships settling over a capital city tomorrow. Most of us would fall to our knees or reach for weapons, and either way our choices would no longer be our own. A being devoted to serving others cannot do that to us without betraying the very thing it serves. In session 16, Ra described the answer to this dilemma as a quarantine around Earth: those who would interfere are not stopped outright but challenged, while humanity stays free to choose for itself.

A gardener cannot make a rosebud bloom faster by prying the petals open. All that achieves is a ruined flower. The benevolent approach is patient by necessity: a presence that is visible enough to be noticed, ambiguous enough to be deniable, and persistent enough that over time we simply grow used to the idea that we are not alone. On this reading, the long parade of sightings over the past eighty years is less a mystery than a slow introduction.

The implication is striking. We tend to assume that we are waiting for them to reveal themselves. Ra’s framework suggests the reverse. They are waiting for us to ask.

The Nuclear Exception

There is one area where the hands-off rule seems to bend, and it involves our most dangerous weapons.

In 2010, seven former US Air Force personnel stood up at the National Press Club and described unidentified objects appearing over nuclear weapons sites, in some cases coinciding with missiles going offline. The best-known account comes from former launch officer Robert Salas, who has long maintained that ten Minuteman missiles at Malmstrom Air Force Base shut down in March 1967 while a glowing object hovered nearby.

In fairness, the official story has been contested. A 2025 Pentagon report reportedly attributed one of the Malmstrom shutdowns to a classified electromagnetic pulse test, an explanation Salas and other witnesses reject. Readers should weigh both.

If the witness accounts are true, though, they fit the pattern well. A good parent lets a toddler stumble and fall a hundred times, because that is how walking is learned. The same parent will not hesitate to pull a small hand away from a hot stove. Nuclear self-destruction is the stove.

How the Other Side Plays the Same Game

Negative entities are bound by the same universal laws. They do not respect free will out of kindness; they respect it because blatant infringement costs them power. So they have to obtain consent another way.

In session 8, Ra contrasted the two approaches plainly: the Confederation waits to be called, while the Orion group calls itself to conquest. Its method is to find people who already resonate with domination, lift them into an elite, and then have that elite lead everyone else into servitude, ideally with the servants believing it was their own idea.

That is the key. Consent extracted through fear, flattery, confusion or shame still counts as consent, metaphysically speaking. Which is why the negative polarity has become so skilled at psychology.

A Simple Test for Every Institution, Including Spiritual Ones

This gives us a practical tool. Whenever a person or institution insists that you must do something, that you have no real choice, and that refusing makes you a bad person, it is worth pausing. That pattern, pressure dressed up as care, is the fingerprint of the service-to-self approach.

What I find most honest about the Ra material is that it applies this test in every direction, not just to governments and corporations. In session 73, Ra noted that even sincere, well-meaning preachers undercut their own work when they try to push people toward positive change without their free consent. Good intentions do not exempt anyone. That includes gurus, online influencers, alternative health movements and, for that matter, writers of spiritual blogs.

A few questions I now ask of anything that wants my loyalty:

  • Am I genuinely free to walk away, with no punishment or shaming?
  • Does this need me to be afraid in order to work?
  • Is there an inner circle that ranks itself above everyone else?
  • Does it make me more loving toward people outside the group, or less?

The positive path never needs to trap you. It only ever needs to invite you.

The Choice Is the Invitation

So why are the ETs here? On Ra’s account, the benevolent ones are here because we are hurting and they cannot ignore it, and the others are here because a planet on the edge of choosing is a prize. Both are, in their own way, waiting on us.

That puts the real power of disclosure in a surprising place. It does not sit only in congressional hearings or declassified files. It sits in the ordinary choices each of us makes every day: whether to meet a stranger with suspicion or goodwill, whether to use what we have to lift others or to rise above them. Ra was clear in session 17 that there is no single correct way to serve. Each of us has to discover our own.

Every time one of us chooses love over control, the needle swings a little more firmly in one direction, and humanity’s call becomes a little less ambiguous. Enough of those choices, and the question will no longer be whether they reveal themselves to us. It will be whether we are ready to say hello.
