Before the Beginning: Thomas Campbell’s Creation Story of Consciousness

Every culture on Earth has told a story about how something came from nothing. Most of those stories reach for gods, floods, cosmic eggs, or a word spoken into the dark. Physicist and consciousness researcher Tom Campbell reached for something else entirely.

Every culture on Earth has told a story about how something came from nothing. Most of those stories reach for gods, floods, cosmic eggs, or a word spoken into the dark. Physicist and consciousness researcher Tom Campbell reached for something else entirely. After decades split between missile defense research and pioneering altered-state exploration alongside Robert Monroe, Campbell built his own creation account, one he calls My Big TOE, short for Theory of Everything. It is not offered as myth. It is offered as a testable model, built from physics and first-hand experience, that still ends up sounding remarkably like a genesis story.

What sets it apart from older creation stories is the direction of causality. Most traditions place mind and matter side by side, or treat matter as primary and mind as something that eventually emerges from it once brains get complicated enough. Campbell inverts that order completely. Consciousness comes first, full stop, and everything else, including the universe we call physical, gets created from it in careful, traceable stages. And unlike a creation story that happened once, long ago, and finished, this one is still running. The same process that produced the first flicker of order out of formlessness is, in Campbell’s account, the same process unfolding through every choice you make today.

Before Anything Existed: Absolute Unbounded Oneness

In Campbell’s model, the story does not open with AUM, the term most people associate with his work. It opens a step earlier, with something he calls Absolute Unbounded Oneness, or AUO. Picture a state with no form, no boundary, and no internal distinction of any kind. Not empty in the sense of nothingness, but undifferentiated in the sense of everythingness with no edges. Campbell describes this primordial state as high in entropy, meaning high in disorder and noise, the exact opposite of the structured universe we eventually inhabit. There is awareness here, but it has nothing to be aware of except itself, endlessly, with no shape to hold onto.

The First Distinction: AUO Becomes AUM

Creation, in this account, begins the moment that formless oneness makes its first move toward order. AUO evolves into a lower-entropy expression of itself, which Campbell names AUM, the Absolute Unbounded Manifold. This is the first true distinction in existence: the shift from pure undifferentiated potential into something organized enough to be called a source. Where AUO simply was, AUM begins to do. It becomes the fundamental source consciousness from which every subsequent layer of reality gets generated. Notice what this means for the shape of the whole story. Entropy reduction is not introduced later as a spiritual rule for humans to follow. It is the very first act of creation, the mechanism by which existence pulls itself out of formlessness in the first place.

Reality Cells: Consciousness Learns to Experiment on Itself

Once AUM exists as an organized, evolving consciousness, it begins to specialize. It generates what Campbell calls Reality Cells, structured enough within the larger field of AUM to run their own internal thought experiments in the ongoing pursuit of lower entropy. He compares this moment to a single-celled organism differentiating into the specialized cells of a complex body, or to the sudden proliferation of new life during the Cambrian explosion. AUM is no longer one undifferentiated field of awareness. It is beginning to grow organs.

A Non-Physical Multiverse Takes Shape

From these Reality Cells, AUM generates entire non-physical matter realities, dimensions of experience separated from one another by frequency rather than by physical distance. Each of these carries its own evolving rule-set, its own internal logic, and its own organizing consciousness overseeing its development. This is, in effect, an entire multiverse of non-physical worlds, nested inside AUM, each one running its own experiment in growing more coherent and less chaotic. None of this has produced anything resembling matter yet. It is still consciousness organizing consciousness, layer within layer.

The nesting itself is worth sitting with for a moment, because it explains why this model reads more like biology than engineering. A single organizing intelligence does not simply build one universe and stop. It behaves the way any living system behaves once it starts to grow: it branches, it specializes, it lets each branch run its own version of the same underlying experiment. Some of those non-physical realities stay relatively simple. Others become complex enough to need further subdivision, and it is out of that further subdivision that something genuinely new is about to appear.

Reality Gets Dense: The Birth of Physical Matter

The final structural step is the one most relevant to us. Certain non-physical realities evolve subsets of themselves with far tighter constraints and denser rule-sets, and these become physical matter realities. Our universe is one of these. What we experience as solid, physical, and separate from mind is, in this framework, simply a reality running under stricter rules than the non-physical layers above it, rendered in enough detail that it feels absolute from the inside. If it helps to picture this in more contemporary terms, it is worth reading Metaphysical Reality Explained in Computer Terms: Souls, Instances, and the Great Rendering Engine, which maps this same layered structure onto the language of software, instances, and rendering.

You Are a Probe: Individuated Units of Consciousness

To explore these physical realities from the inside, the larger consciousness system fragments itself into Individuated Units of Consciousness, or IUOCs. Each of us is one of these fragments, sent as a kind of probe into a dense, slow, rule-bound simulation that the larger system could never fully understand from the outside. The forgetting that comes with being born here is not a malfunction. It is the design. A choice only means something if it is made without already knowing the answer, and a probe that remembered its source completely could not generate real data about fear, love, or the countless quiet decisions that make up an ordinary life.

Why the Forgetting Requires Free Will

None of this would work without genuine choice. If an individuated fragment entered a physical reality already knowing the outcome of every decision, its experience would carry no new information back to the larger system. The forgetting has to be real, and the choices made inside it have to be uncoerced, or the entire structure collapses into a very expensive way of watching a rerun. This is why Campbell treats free will as load-bearing rather than decorative. Every ordinary moment of choosing patience over irritation, honesty over convenience, or generosity over self-protection is not a side effect of being human. It is the actual mechanism by which a fragment of the larger system tests whether order can be chosen freely, under real uncertainty, without being told the ending in advance. Multiply that by however many individuated units are running their own physical-reality experiments at once, and the picture that emerges is less like a single story being told and more like an enormous, distributed experiment in what consciousness can become when it stops knowing all the answers.

Entropy: The Story’s Engine From Start to Finish

Trace the whole arc back from where you are sitting right now to the formless oneness at the very beginning, and one thread runs through every stage without a single break. AUO reduces its own entropy to become AUM. AUM reduces entropy further by organizing itself into Reality Cells. Those cells generate non-physical realities that keep refining their own coherence. Those realities generate physical ones, denser and more constrained, purpose-built for the kind of contrast and difficulty that makes real growth possible. And every individuated fragment sent into those physical realities, including you, is still running the same original program: choosing order over chaos, love over fear, coherence over noise, one decision at a time. Campbell’s full explanation of how this system fits together is laid out on the official My Big TOE overview, for anyone who wants to follow the model past this creation story and into its physics.

The Story Is Still Being Written

What makes this creation account unusual is that it never closes. Most origin stories describe a single act, finished long ago, that the rest of us simply inherited. Campbell’s model describes a system still actively lowering its own entropy through every conscious choice made inside it, including yours. Every time a person moves toward greater coherence instead of greater chaos, in ways as small as choosing patience over reactivity, the story that began with a formless, undifferentiated oneness takes one more quiet step forward. You are not just a character reading about the beginning. You are one of the ways the beginning keeps happening.
