Do you sense a deeper part of yourself, a wellspring of potential and wisdom that feels just beyond your grasp? In the hurried pace of modern life, it's easy to feel disconnected from this essential core, this "Higher Self" that Wayne Dyer so eloquently described. Yet, bridging this gap is not only possible but, according to Dyer, a fundamental key to transformation and living a life of purpose and joy. He offered a simple yet profound exercise, rooted in the power of imagination, to help us reconnect with this incredible inner resource.
Do you sense a deeper part of yourself, a wellspring of potential and wisdom that feels just beyond your grasp? In the hurried pace of modern life, it’s easy to feel disconnected from this essential core, this “Higher Self” that Wayne Dyer so eloquently described. Yet, bridging this gap is not only possible but, according to Dyer, a fundamental key to transformation and living a life of purpose and joy. He offered a simple yet profound exercise, rooted in the power of imagination, to help us reconnect with this incredible inner resource.
To understand this exercise, we must first grasp Dyer’s distinction between our “lower self” and our “Higher Self.” The lower self, often synonymous with the ego, is the part of us that identifies with the external conditions of our lives – our possessions, achievements, reputation, and the opinions of others. It is the voice of fear, limitation, and the belief in scarcity. This ego-driven self is what we often present to the world, and it can feel like our entire reality. However, Dyer taught that this lower self is, in essence, a “false self,” an illusion that obscures the magnificent truth of who we are.

The Higher Self, in contrast, is the divine spark within, the “God within you,” as Dyer put it. It is the almighty, omniscient, omnipotent energy that is our birthright. This is our true self, our origin point, an essence connected to the invisible field of energy from which all of existence springs. It is the source of our intuition, our creativity, our unconditional love, and our limitless potential. The challenge, as Dyer saw it, is that we become so entangled with the concerns and limitations of the lower self that we lose sight of this powerful, ever-present Higher Self. The path to transformation lies in allowing the boundless qualities of the Higher Self to permeate and ultimately integrate with the lower self.
At the heart of this transformative process lies the power of imagination. Dyer considered imagination to be the greatest gift we possess, the fertile ground where all creation begins. Every invention, every work of art, every act of kindness first took shape in someone’s imagination. It is through this potent faculty that we can begin to bridge the perceived distance between our ordinary, ego-bound self and the extraordinary potential of our Higher Self.
The exercise Dyer proposed is a form of active imagination, ideally practiced during meditation for about 30 minutes daily. It is not a passive visualization but a dynamic engagement with these two aspects of your being. Here’s how the exercise unfolds:
Begin by finding a quiet space where you can sit comfortably and without interruption. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to center yourself.
By consistently engaging in this imaginative exercise, you are, as Dyer described, setting in motion an invisible current, a vital link between the self above and the self below. It’s a paradoxical process of both dividing yourself in consciousness (into the observer and the observed) and simultaneously initiating a profound unification. The true self, the Higher Self, watches the lower self engaged in the very act of seeking that higher connection. This extraordinary current fosters the development of your superconscious awareness, allowing you to tap into a level of knowing and being beyond the limitations of the ego.
The ultimate goal of this practice is the unification of these two aspects of your being. Through consistent effort, the perceived gulf between the higher and lower poles begins to diminish. The separation blurs, and eventually, they fuse into one integrated whole. When this profound unification occurs, the lower self – the ego, with its fears, insecurities, and false identifications – no longer holds sway and begins to dissolve.
What remains, according to Dyer, is your real, authentic Higher Self. In this state of unified being, the limitations that once defined you vanish. There is no more weakness, no more discouragement, no more darkness. You begin to experience qualities that the lower self could only dream of – a sense of being omniscient, immortal, and eternal.
While complete and constant unification may seem like a distant ideal, Dyer emphasized that even accessing a small percentage of this Higher Self can dramatically impact your life. Tapping into just 1%, 2%, or 3% of this incredible energy allows you to access insights, guidance, and knowing through your intuition that the limited, fear-based lower self simply cannot perceive. It’s like opening a channel to a vast reservoir of wisdom and power that was always within you but was previously blocked by the noise and distractions of the ego.
Connecting with this Higher Self is intimately linked to living your true calling, your dharma. Dyer believed that each of us comes into this world with a unique purpose, a specific “music that you came here to play.” This calling is not something dictated by external expectations or societal pressures; it is an inner knowing, a deep resonance that emanates from your Higher Self. You cannot fulfill someone else’s dharma or live a life based on what others think you should do. To discover and live your true calling, you must turn inward and connect with that authentic essence.
Living from the space of your Higher Self also cultivates two crucial qualities essential for a fulfilling and authentic life: independence of the good opinion of other people and detachment from outcome. When you are deeply connected to your inner truth, the validation or approval of others becomes less significant. You are driven by an inner compass, guided by the whispers of your Higher Self, rather than the fluctuating tides of external opinions.
Similarly, detachment from outcome means pursuing your passions and your calling not for the potential rewards, recognition, or specific results, but because it is what genuinely resonates within you. You are motivated by the joy of the process itself, the expression of your unique gifts and talents, regardless of how the external world responds. This doesn’t mean you don’t have goals or aspirations, but your inner peace and sense of worth are not contingent upon achieving a particular result.
By consistently practicing this imagination exercise, you are actively working towards becoming that unified, Higher Self-actualized individual. You are dismantling the false limitations of the ego and stepping into the boundless potential that is your true nature. It is a journey of returning home to the incredible, powerful, and divine being that you were always meant to be, free from the constraints of the lower self and fully aligned with your true calling. This path requires dedication and imagination, but the transformation it promises – a life lived from a place of inner knowing, purpose, and unlimited potential – is the most profound and rewarding journey you can undertake.
