Breathing Room Yoga offers sound healing sessions that include sound baths with crystal singing bowls and gongs for stress relief and relaxation. They provide both group and private sessions for individuals seeking a meditative experience. Additionally, their sound healing services are also available for corporate events for wellness and team-building purposes.
In a town known for campus vibes and carbo loading pizza wars, an unexpected oasis of tranquility floats above the bustling Crown Street scene. Breathing Room Yoga, perched on the second floor of a classical revival building (yes, directly above Club Ramaj), offers a masterclass in adaptive reuse and mindful urban sanctuary-making. The space reads like a love letter to New Haven's architectural heritage: soaring barrel-vaulted ceilings adorned with medallions, sunlight streaming through grand arched windows, and hardwood floors that have witnessed countless transformations. Here, in a feat of inspired urban planning, wellness meets whimsy in the most unexpected ways. Take, for instance, the janitor's closet, now a carefully curated tea room where dozens of ceramic mugs line the walls like patient sentinels waiting for their next meditation session. It's the kind of detail that makes you wonder why more humble cleaning closets haven't found their higher calling. The main studio space eschews the typical trappings of contemporary yoga establishments. No Instagram-worthy neon signs declaring "Good Vibes Only" here. Instead, the architecture does the talking, and what a conversation it has to offer. The practice room, with its museum-worthy moldings and natural light, feels less like a fitness space and more like a Renaissance hall that decided to take up mindfulness. The boutique area strikes that elusive balance between commercial and conscious, offering both new items (spot the cheeky "Life Happens, Yoga Helps" apparel) and pre-loved yoga wear. It's sustainability with a side of style, all displayed beneath lighting fixtures that would make any architectural historian swoon. Classes run daily from 8:30 AM, with a schedule as accommodating as the studio's philosophy toward different body types and abilities. The approach here is refreshingly non-competitive, think of it as a one-room schoolhouse for the body and soul, where the only grading system is your own breath. What sets Breathing Room apart isn't just its stunning shell or its convenient location (though being steps from New Haven's best restaurants doesn't hurt). It's the palpable sense that this space was created with intention, a rare find in our age of quick-build yoga franchises and temporary wellness trends. Pro tip: Arrive early to snag a cup of tea and a window spot. The view of Crown Street below offers a perfect metaphor for your practice: the busy world continues its dance while you find your stillness above it all. The Lowdown: Breathing Room Yoga 216 Crown St, Second Floor (203) 562-5683 Classes from $20, and ClassPass Open daily 8:30 AM - 8:30 PM (shorter hours Friday and Saturday) breathingroomct.com Bottom Line: In a city that excels at mixing old with new, high with low, and town with gown, Breathing Room Yoga might be New Haven's most elegant example of finding balance in apparent contradictions. Om away from home, indeed.
LOVE the new space. In the big room, we had our workshop, and it had such a warmth - and despite the fact we had a large attendance in class- the acoustical layout of the room, it still felt intimate. The renovations embraced the character of the building - from the large accents like the huge fireplaces- down to the details. Can’t wait to come back for another class soon. Great job Margot!
Amazing space with great teachers for all yoga levels 10/10 would recommend. They also have great deals on memberships and multi-class passes.
